Introduction

Carlyle Group is the latest player to throw its hat in the ring for a slice of Manchester United, a club valued at billions of dollars. Here’s a closer look at what’s going on and what it could mean for the football world.

The Glazer family puts Manchester United up for sale

The Glazer family, who currently own Manchester United, began trying to sell the club last year. They have received bids from some of the wealthiest people in the world, including UK billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani from Qatar. Now, private equity giant Carlyle Group has joined the fray.

Carlyle Group’s interest in Manchester United

According to sources close to the situation, Carlyle Group is “serious” about buying a minority stake in Manchester United. While the details of the proposal haven’t yet been finalized, it’s clear that the Nasdaq-listed company sees great value in the club.

Who is Carlyle Group?

Carlyle Group is one of the world’s largest private equity firms, having raised almost $50 billion in 2022 alone. Based in Washington, DC, the firm has invested in a range of companies, from clothing brand Supreme to UK video game developer Jagex. Buying a stake in Manchester United would be a significant move for Carlyle Group.

Who else is bidding for Manchester United?

Ratcliffe, the UK’s second-wealthiest person, is a Manchester United fan himself and has made a bid for the club. Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, a member of Qatar’s royal family, has also expressed interest in buying a stake in the club. Both parties are said to be serious about their bids.

Manchester United’s recent history

Manchester United has enjoyed tremendous success over the years, winning the English title a record 20 times. However, the club has struggled to maintain its dominance in recent years, with its last Premier League triumph coming in 2013. The Glazer family has faced criticism from fans, who accuse them of prioritizing profit over the success of the club.

The impact of the potential sale

If Carlyle Group, Ratcliffe, or Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani were to purchase a stake in Manchester United, it could have significant implications for the club’s future. With more financial resources, the club could potentially sign more high-profile players and invest in facilities and infrastructure. However, it remains to be seen how new ownership would affect the Glazer family’s relationship with the club.

Conclusion

Manchester United is one of the most iconic football clubs in the world, and its potential sale has attracted attention from around the globe. With Carlyle Group joining the bidding war, the future of the club is uncertain but filled with possibilities.

The Glazer family should have already sold the club by now. It was clear that Man Utd supporters want something different. I think handing it over to Ratcliffe would be the best choice. He’s a big fan of the club and if he brings in the right people Man Utd can return to the glory days.

If it gets sold to the Qatar royal family there will be a huge upset among the fans. It won’t go well. The fans want someone that loves the club and puts the club first, always. If Ratcliffe can’t take the club on his own, maybe offering a minority share to the Carlyle Group could be an option.

Man Utd is not Man City and selling it to anyone that doesn’t care about the club and/or just wants to build a reputation (like the Qatar royal family wants to do) will never work here. Mant Utd is among the top clubs in the world with the most supporters and many, many trophies. It shouldn’t get sold to anyone.
