Introduction

Elon Musk’s recent call for a moratorium on advanced AI research has sparked debate among experts in the field. Some, such as Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Facebook-owner Meta, have dismissed Musk’s plea as unnecessary fearmongering. LeCun has compared the call to halt AI research to the Catholic Church’s opposition to printing presses in the Middle Ages. This article will examine the comparison made by LeCun and explore the risks and benefits of AI research.

The Comparison between the Church’s Opposition to Printing Presses and Musk’s Plea to Halt AI Research

LeCun’s tweet refers to the Church’s opposition to printing presses, which they saw as a threat to their authority. The printing press allowed information to be disseminated more widely, and the Church feared that this would undermine their control over the masses. The comparison with Musk’s plea to halt AI research is based on the idea that new technologies can be disruptive and that there is a natural resistance to change.

The Risks and Benefits of AI Research

The call for a moratorium on AI research is based on concerns about the risks associated with the technology. These risks include the possibility of AI systems becoming “out of control” and posing a threat to society and humanity. However, there are also many potential benefits of AI research, such as the development of more efficient and effective systems for a wide range of applications, including healthcare, transportation, and communication.

The Future of AI Research

The debate over the risks and benefits of AI research is likely to continue for some time. While Musk’s call for a moratorium may be seen as alarmist by some, it does highlight the need for caution and careful consideration when it comes to new technologies. The development of AI systems that are safe and beneficial for society will require ongoing research and collaboration between experts from a range of fields.

Conclusion

The comparison made by Yann LeCun between Musk’s call for a moratorium on AI research and the Church’s opposition to printing presses is an interesting one. While there are risks associated with the development of AI systems, there are also many potential benefits. The key to ensuring that the benefits outweigh the risks will be ongoing research and collaboration between experts in the field.

Comparing this to the Catholic Church’s opposition to printing presses in the Middle Ages is funny to say the least. Musk’s concerns are grounded in reality: we can’t control how fast AI grows and it’s getting out of hand. This will surely lead to trouble, sooner or later. There are so many things to consider that it’s hard to even know where to start.

While I understand LeCun’s point I also understand Musk’s concerns. We should all want humanity to evolve and use AI to its benefit but should we just allow things to unfold as they would without setting any bars? Where do we draw a line?

What is now happening with AI reminds me of the TV series “Person of Interest” where it can be seen what this could lead too. And that’s not even the worst that could happen.

It’s clear to me that 1) we need to make progress and AI can definitely help with this and 2) we can’t afford to let things run their course and let AI unchecked because we risk losing all control over what it does.
